- Purpose
The purpose of this study is to construct and verify a path model for the factors affecting on quality of life in long-term care insurance in-home service users.
Methods
Total 246 participants using long-term care insurance in-home service were recruited from long-term care agencies. Data collection was conducted using a structured questionnaire from March 1st to March 31st 2021. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26 and AMOS 26 programs.
Results
The hypothetical path model was suitable for explaining the health-related quality of life in long-term care insurance in-home service users and has an explanatory power of 39.8%. Long-term care grade, depression, perceived health status, social support, age and living arrangement had a significant total effect on the quality of life in long-term care insurance in-home service users.
Conclusion
Long-term care insurance in-home service policies need to be expanded, such as screening and relieving depression, strengthening social support, and fostering a positive perception of health to improve the quality of life of the elderly.

- PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of an oral self-care program on oral dryness and oral health related quality of life in the elderly.
METHODS
The current research design isa nonequivalent control group protest-posttest design with two groups of elders from two different senior centers in D city. Tools for the research include paper of salivary absorption (WF41-1850, Whatman, Germany), 6 items for subjective oral dryness and OHIP-14 for oral health related to quality of life. The data were analyzed to test three hypotheses by using the SPSS 22.0 program.
RESULTS
The three hypotheses were significantly accepted. The subjective oral dryness score was lower in the experimental group than in the control group (t=-2.45, p=.022). Salivary absorption was higher in the experimental group than in the control group (t=3.83, p < .001).Oral health related quality of life was better in the experimental group than in the control group (t=-2.11, p=.044).
CONCLUSION
The oral self-care program has appeared to be effective on oral dryness and an oral health related quality of life in the elderly. Therefore, it can be suggested that the oral self-care program is applicable as an intervention program motivating the elderly to maintain oral health.

- PURPOSE
This study investigated medication status by examining the effects of a medication management education program on the knowledge of medications and medication misuse behaviors in the elderly in a local community.
METHODS
This study used a non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental design. For the study, 116 subjects were assigned to the control group and another 116 subjects were assigned to the experimental group. The medication management education program consisted of 1:1 education, practice in medication management, consultation, and discussion. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 program.
RESULTS
Statistically significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups in terms of their knowledge of medications and medication misuse behaviors.
CONCLUSION
The results indicate that the medical management education program is effective in improving the knowledge of medications and decreasing medication misuse behaviors. Therefore, this education program can be used as an intervention to improve the medication behaviors of the elderly in local communities.

Abstract

- PURPOSE
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of case management for patients with hypertension on their health status and medical service utilization.
METHODS
This study was a secondary analysis of data collected for a larger study of chronic disease management in 2008 using the National Health Insurance Corporation database. A total of 12,944 patients who received case management for hypertension were included in this analysis. The subjects of case management were classified into subgroups, namely, over-use, under-use, and non-use groups according to the amount of medical service utilization. To compare the medical service utilization, a control group was selected randomly. The data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, McNemar test, and ANOVA.
RESULTS
All the subgroups displayed significant differences in blood pressure, self-management, social support, and their characteristics of medical service utilization. The total medical expense of the under-use and non-use groups increased after case management. However, there was no decrease in the medical expense of the over-use group.
CONCLUSION
This finding suggests that there is a need to re-examine why patients overuse medical services and to supplement specific strategies for encouraging appropriate medical service utilization, and enhancing case management efforts for the over-use group.

Abstract
PDF
- PURPOSE
The aim of the study was to identify nursing informatics competencies of nurses working for public health centers in Chungcheongnam-do.
METHODS
Data were collected from June 10 to July 25, 2012 using the Nursing Informatics Competencies Questionnaire (NICQ). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, chi2-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient.
RESULTS
Nursing informatics competencies of the subjects showed a mean score of 3.3+/-1.0 out of 5. As for scores of individual categories, the score for computer skills competencies was 3.3+/-1.0, informatics knowledge competencies 3.4+/-0.9, and informatics skills competencies 3.0+/-0.9. Nursing informatics competencies were positively correlated with the subjects' ages (r=.65, p<.001), computer usage hours (r=.23, p = .015), levels of demand for informatics knowledge (r=.51, p<.001), and informatics skills education (r=.78, p<.001).
CONCLUSION
Nursing informatics is required to be connected with job training or in-service education on account of its growing necessity for public health nurses. It is also essential to develop programs for strengthening informatics competencies reflecting sub-categories of educational needs.

- PURPOSE
This study was conducted to examine the effects of exercise on physiological, physical and psychological functions of the frail elderly.
METHODS
The research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected from September 9 to October 10, 2009. The subjects were 56 frail elders who agreed to participate in this study and each subject was randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n=28) or the control group (n=28). The exercise program was provided to each subject in the experimental group twice in a week for 6 weeks. Data were analyzed with frequency, chi2-test, Kolmogorov-Smirnor test and independent t-test using SPSS/WIN 12.0.
RESULTS
There was a significant improvement in psychological functions in the experimental group compared to the control group (t=1.726, p=.045).
CONCLUSION
The exercise program showed the effects to improve the psychological functions of the frail elderly with chronic disease. In recommendation, this exercise program could be utilized as a health promoting program for the frail elderly.

Abstract
PDF
- PURPOSE
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the costs and benefits of individual home visiting health care using secondary data and literature review.
METHODS
The total number of subjects was 1,008,837. A specific program was classified into disease management, care of infant, child and women, or elderly care. The costs and effects of a program were identified from a societal perspective, and the effects were converted into monetary terms or benefits. The total cost was calculated in the way that medical expenses, travel costs and productivity losses were offset by the decrease in benefits and thus only the program budget was included in the total cost.
RESULTS
The total program cost was 47.6 billion won per year and the total annual benefit was estimated at 435.6 billion won. The benefits of arthritis management were the biggest among disease management programs. The net benefit was 388.0 billion won per year and the benefit/cost ratio was 9.16.
CONCLUSION
Home visiting health care was validated to be economically effective. It made a positive contribution to improving the health status of vulnerable populations and reducing medical expenses. These results suggest that home visiting care should be extended more broadly to vulnerable populations.

Abstract

- PURPOSE
This study investigated the situation of public health official training and suggested a scheme for improving central and local official training institutes, in order to improve the quality and quantity of training programs for central and local public health officials.
METHODS
This study examined training resources, design processes, content and methods of training programs of the Department of Health and Welfare Training in NIH and the fifteen city and provincial officials training institutes in 2002.
RESULTS
The central and the local officials training institutes didn't exchange information on public health training. NIH supplied various specialized training programs for senior and junior officials. However, city and provincial official training institutes supplied a few training programs for local public health officials.
CONCLUSION
A mutually cooperative relationship is needed between central and local official training institutes to exchange information on public health official training. The Department of Health and Welfare Training in NIH as a central training institute has to develop training programs related to new public health policies, supply training programs for senior officials, and support local official training institutes. To satisfy the training demands of public health officials, the city and provincial official training institutes should increase the number of training programs for junior officials.
